Anxiety doesn’t happen for just one reason- it’s shaped by many different factors. Some things can increase your risk of anxiety, while others can protect your mental health and help you cope.

Risk Factors (things that make anxiety more likely):

  • Family history of anxiety or other mental health conditions

  • Ongoing stress or pressure (like school, social media, or family issues)

  • Trauma or difficult life experiences

  • Low self-esteem or negative thinking patterns

  • Lack of support or connection with others

These don’t cause anxiety directly, but they can make it harder to manage stress and emotions.

Protective Factors (things that help you stay strong!):

  • Supportive family and friends

  • Healthy coping skills (like journaling, art, or mindfulness)

  • A safe, stable environment

  • Good sleep, nutrition, and exercise habits

  • Positive self-talk and confidence in asking for help

The more protective factors you have, the better you can handle life’s ups and downs- even when anxiety shows up.
